Special things are brewing at PURE Academy. The school — located on Chelsea Avenue — played its first football game in 2020, picking up players where it could when COVID-19 canceled the season for Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Five years later, the Royals are a full-fledged TSSAA member. With big dreams to match. First-year coach DeJuan McQuarters has assembled a talented group that will be a factor once it joins Division 2-A West in 2027. PURE opens its season at Brighton on Aug. 22. — John Varlas
