Memphis Tigers coach Penny Hardaway isn’t going anywhere. His three assistant coaches aren’t returning.
That was the word from the Tigers on Monday as
athletic director Ed Scott made his decision on the future of Hardaway, who has two years remaining on his current contract but is coming off a 13-19 season that ended with an opening-game exit from the American Conference Tournament.
Tim Buckley reported the news, and
Geoff Calkins opined on the move Monday, while Buckley and Parth Upadhyaya both wrote from
the Tigers’ tourney loss to Tulane last Wednesday night in Birmingham, Alabama.
Frank Bonner II produced a terrific piece on what the
Tigers should be looking after firing women’s basketball coach Alex Simmons — one of the highlights of The Daily Memphian’s sports staff’s work from the week.
Sticking with hoops, John Varlas traveled out of town to report on
the girls high school state tournament last week, and he continues to do so again this week with the
boys tourney, as he previewed.
And Drew Hill made his way to Nashville to
report on the SEC Tournament there, bringing home a story on the college conference’s
top potential NBA Draft lottery picks.
Want to forget about basketball for a moment, especially with the way things have gone this season for the Tigers and Grizzlies?
Minor-league hockey is returning to the Mid-South — yippie — and Sophia Surrett from newsside reported on that Tuesday.
Finally, in case you forgot, a reminder and an invitation: The Daily Memphis sports staff is talking sports, and we want you to visit with us as we do. So … make plans now to join us at Wiseacre HQ, the popular brewing company’s downtown location at 398 South B.B. King Blvd., for a panel event on Memphis sports moderated by Calkins.
The gathering is planned for 5 p.m. on March 31, a Tuesday. You can ask our sports staff members questions and connect with other local fans.
Guests will receive one complimentary drink and enjoy a charcuterie board, with additional beverages and food available for purchase. The event is free, but with a suggested donation to help support our work.
