The Memphis Tigers opened preseason football camp last Thursday. Since then, Frank Bonner II has been reporting on what’s been happening as the start of the Charles Huff coaching era nears.

The Tigers open their first season under Huff, a former head coach at Southern Miss and Marshall, on Aug. 29 against UNLV in Las Vegas.

Before camp opened, Tim Buckley addressed the starting quarterback battle between apparent top contender Marcus Stokes and still-in-the-running Air Noland.

Bonner picked up the ball from there, helping to highlight The Daily Memphian sports coverage for the week by writing about what Huff has been saying about both big goals and a recent court matter that could impact roster management.

The same court case could give former Tigers basketball players Zach Davis and Dug McDaniel an extra season of eligibility, as Bonner also reported last Friday.

Speaking of basketball, Chris Herrington presented another Grizzlies Mailbag on Monday while Drew Hill wrote about how related court matters could impact Memphis’ second-round 2026 NBA Draft pick, BYU product Richie Saunders.

As school is back in session for the high school kids, preps news has come fast and furiously in recent days: John Varlas previewed MASE’s football program; Varlas reported on new Collierville High baseball coach Clay Greene, and Abigail Warren from news side dug into why former coach Jeff Munier was let go; and Laura Testino, also from news side, wrote about how a New York City-based charter organization could soon steer new two team-based schools to Memphis.

Also in the past week: Buckley reported over the weekend on the future of The Arena League’s Memphis Hound Dogs, who recently concluded their inaugural season. Phil Stukenborg took time out of his busy retirement schedule to report on how things went as the inaugural Memphis Classic pro women’s tennis tournament wrapped up Sunday with 16-year-old Russian Kristina Liutova winning.
