DeSoto County escapee not facing contempt of court charge

Joshua Zimmerman will not face additional charges related to his failure to appear in court last June, but he remains held without bail following a judge’s ruling this week.
In an order issued Monday, Dec. 10, Circuit Court Judge Gerald Chatham withdrew charges of contempt for Zimmerman’s failure to appear on June 14, the day he escaped the Hernando courthouse and led multiple law-enforcement agencies on a manhunt that lasted more than two months.
Chatham cited “interests of justice and judicial economy” for his ruling Monday, but Zimmerman still faces a host of charges in DeSoto County and various other judicial districts, including in Harris County, Texas.
