The museum to commemorate the nation’s worst maritime disaster is set to open just 20 minutes from Downtown Memphis.
The renovation of the school gym in Marion, Arkansas is just about complete. It will be followed by exhibits to chronicle the history of the nation’s worst maritime disaster 7 miles from Memphis.
The museum, which is run by the Sultana Historical Preservation Society, has raised $10 million so far as it moves toward a full opening on the 161st anniversary of the disaster next April.
“Solid Gold Soul: The Best of the Rest from the Stax Museum” is on show now. The exhibit features staff-selected artifacts from Stax’s vast archives, including Isaac Hayes’ desk from the 1970s.
