“I’m absolutely befuddled why the city government, why the county government and why the state of Tennessee would give money to a person to run a nonprofit organization when they had been convicted of stealing money from a nonprofit organization in the past,” said Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee.
Former public official DeAndre Brown and his wife Vinessa Brown were charged with misusing $1.38 million in public money. The pair ran the Lifeline to Success non-profit, which is now also under scrutiny.
Working for 15 years to reduce recidivism in Memphis, Lifeline to Success has helped some 2,271 former inmates navigate life after incarceration.
DeAndre Brown has been tapped to be the acting head of the county’s re-entry program.
Crime impacts neighborhoods across the city. From Frayser to Whitehaven, community leaders discuss how to address the problem and the causes that contribute to it.
The selected organizations work in areas of the city ranging from Frayser to Hickory Hill.
The plan, which may be considered by city government later this month, would address blight in an area near Northgate Shopping Center.
The Brown family started the idea of Lifeline to Success at their dinner table 2009, and they have counseled 1,200 people in the 10 years since it began.
