Billed as “a proactive alternative to state-imposed governance,” the new intervention would create a Memphis-Shelby County Schools board committee of local elected officials and community members.
“There’s financial record mismanagement, waste and abuse of contracts, disorganization at a level that’s unprecedented,” state Rep. Mark White told The Daily Memphian Friday.
“If we do nothing then we are really leaving ourselves at the will of the state,” said Commissioner Shante Avant.
The legislation and local reaction to it were among the topics discussed by a reporters’ roundtable on “Behind The Headlines.”
Speaking outside of the National Civil Rights Museum, a group of business and community leaders launched a coalition, arguing a state takeover would strip Memphians of the ability to govern their schools and make decisions for students.
Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery said on “Behind The Headlines” that he would like to see the commission have line-item control of MSCS spending.
