Ask the Memphian: How vulnerable are MLGW systems to cyberattacks?

By , Daily Memphian Updated: August 17, 2026 4:00 AM CT | Published: August 17, 2026 4:00 AM CT

Memphis Light, Gas and Water President Doug McGowen has a simple message meant to reassure Memphians who have heard about cyberattacks on water supplies in at least 12 states in recent weeks.

Relax, your water supply is safe, and MLGW remains vigilant to keep it that way, McGowen said.

“We haven’t had any impact, and we don’t believe that we’ve had any attempts here at Memphis like (the others nationwide),” McGowen said. “This is something that we at MLGW prepare for. We have a team of people in place who do this work every day to protect us against cyberattacks. We have a number of strategies in place, hardware, software, as well as intelligence and processes, that safeguard our systems.”
