Petra Cafe reopens near old Carrefour location
“We really stayed right across the street from where we were, so hopefully people will find us very easily now,” Petra Cafe owner Jamal Douba said. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian)
Fourteen months after closing his doors unexpectedly, Jamal Douba has reopened Petra Cafe across the street from its former home.
“We knew the redevelopment was coming maybe a year (before closing), but we didn’t know exactly when we’d have to leave until they gave us 30 days to vacate,” Douba said. “We were expecting to be there another year, but by the end of December 2024, they told us we had to be out.”
Douba’s Mediterranean restaurant was initially located in the Carrefour at Kirby Woods shopping plaza near the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Kirby Parkway. The restaurant had been there 16 years when Douba and other tenants were notified that the site had been sold and the shopping center would be demolished.
