While everyone around her was slathering purple powder on their faces, pink powder in their hair and just about every color of powder imaginable all over their clothes, Varnika Padit was the exception.
The 15-year-old girl stood a bit off to the side Saturday, March 21, wary of anyone coming too close to her at the pavilion near the horse stables in Shelby Farms.
That’s because unlike almost all the others who gathered to celebrate the Holi and Kite Festival put on by the India Association of Memphis, Varnika isn’t a fan of suddenly resembling an Oompa Loompa.
