Earnestine Jenkins hopes Dixon Gallery & Gardens visitors take note of the “acculturation” — the blended product of African and American cultures — that defines Black creativity.

“Acculturation is when you have a real authentic blending of two or more cultures that makes something else and different entirely,” Jenkins said. “It’s really the definition of what America is.”

Jenkins, an art-history professor at the University of Memphis for nearly 25 years, curated the exhibition “Black Artists in America: From the Bicentennial to September 11.”

The exhibit closes Sunday, March 29.
