A bill that would have awarded FedEx Corp. $20 million in tax breaks for building materials failed on the House floor Monday, March 30, following a close vote.
House Bill 1978, by Rep. Mark White, R-Memphis, would have continued a long trend of tax breaks for the shipping giant. The sponsor said FedEx spent about $2.5 billion in Tennessee last year alone.
“This is a smart, performance-based incentive that keeps Tennessee competitive,” White said, using Indiana as an example of a state that passed similar legislation for the Indianapolis FedEx Hub.
