Daily Jigsaw: Spring Fling win
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Johnie Sanfratello has never been shy about throwing eighth-graders into the varsity-softball fire.
Heck, he had two in the starting lineup Thursday as Tipton-Rosemark Academy took on Chattanooga Boyd-Buchanan for the Division 2-A state championship at MTSU’s Blue Raider Field. And back in 2022, he gave the ball to a promising youngster named Lanie Howe.
“We were in the semifinal elimination game against GPS (Chattanooga Girls Preparatory School),” Sanfratello recalled. “Three innings, two innings, she didn’t have a great outing. I did that because our other two girls had already been seen.
“But my main focus was knowing that she would be in this game eventually. So I’m like, ‘I’m going to throw her to the dogs as an eighth-grader.’ She competed her butt off, and it prepared her for (Thursday).”
