Kristen Hildebrand came out to her family and friends decades ago in a time that was much less accepting than it is now.

And while she thinks those times were much more difficult for the LGBTQ+ community than the current political climate, she still looks around her at all the rhetoric and hate directed toward people like her, and she worries.

After all, it was only a few days ago that Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles tweeted, “Homosexuality has no place in America.”

The backlash was swift, and Ogles eventually blamed the tweet on an underling. But he’s not the only political figure to express similar sentiments.
