Daily Jigsaw: AutoZone Park’s future
Mike Skyles has been attending Memphis Redbirds games since the Triple-A baseball team arrived in the city in 1998 as an expansion franchise.
AutoZone Park construction began the same year, so the Redbirds played their first two seasons at now-demolished Tim McCarver Stadium, the former home of the Double-A Memphis Chicks. The Redbirds moved to AutoZone Park in 2000, and now — more than 2½ decades later — the Union Avenue stadium is in disrepair.
Last month, the Memphis City Council approved spending $5 million for what the team deemed to be emergency repairs. The Redbirds are privately owned by Diamond Baseball Holdings, a group with nearly 50 minor-league teams in its portfolio.
