The Tony Award-winning musical “Suffs” opened Friday, July 31, at the Orpheum Theatre. It tells the story of the women’s suffrage movement in the years leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

The plot centers on the clash between the confrontational National Woman’s Party and the National American Woman Suffrage Association, which favored a slower, state-by-state approach.

The show also highlights the movement’s Black activists, including Memphians Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell.

Actress Trisha Jeffrey, who portrays Terrell in the show, visited the Memphis Suffrage Monument, located behind the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in Downtown Memphis, on Tuesday, July 28.
