Daily Jigsaw: Bridges to books
Author and Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges, in partnership with the National Civil Rights Museum, welcomed families and young readers to its ninth Ruby Bridges Reading Festival at the museum’s Legacy Center on Saturday, Aug. 1.
She hosted readings of her books throughout the day and signed hundreds of copies for a constant stream of guests of all ages in the Legacy Center’s Freedom Gallery, all for free and all to encourage young people to get excited about reading while honoring the legacy of Black authors.
“We believe that doing so puts into action the idea and the possibility of what young people can be, who they can be and how they can change the world,” NCRM President Russ Wigginton said. “The greatness that’s already inside them can flourish through reading, literacy and a good book.”
