The Region 8-6A opener between Whitehaven and Germantown was just the kind of football Stan Collins is used to.
Old-fashioned. Smash-mouth. A little ugly, perhaps, at times.
And with the Tigers winning.
Playing against the school he transferred from in the offseason, Jourdin Shelton hit Malik Dean on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 4:19 left in the game as the Tigers — ranked fourth in the Daily Memphian Dandy Dozen — outlasted the No. 10 Red Devils, 7-6.
The winning touchdown came near the end of a rock fight between the rivals, with plenty of turnovers, penalties and passion.
