Memphis-area and Mississippi schools closures, more winter weather updates

This article includes information about city services, warming centers, parks and library closures, school closures and other weather information for Memphis and the Mid-South. It will be updated regularly.

Schools

Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses will remain closed Wednesday, Feb. 4. This marks the eighth day of closures due to icy road conditions from the winter storm. Charter schools make their own weather closure announcements. MSCS has a stockpile of eight days available.

MSCS delays school-choice application window to Feb. 5.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools has again delayed its school-choice application window, last set for Feb. 3.

Applications for optional schools and general choice transfers now open on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m.

This is the second time the district has delayed the application because of weather-related school closures.

Public schools in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown Lakeland and Millington will remain out of school Wednesday, Feb. 4 using the last of eight stockpile days districts set aside for inclement weather.

Suburban officials hoped rain and warmer temperatures would help snow melt Tuesday but patches of ice in shaded areas and on side roads create challenging transportation issues.

Districts have lingering ice on campuses. Buses would struggle to navigate neighborhoods, and slick sidewalks are not safe for students who walk to campus, according to school officials.

Many of the suburban schools are on neighborhood roads, which are not treated by the municipal governments

Suburban school districts have inclement-weather days built in their schedules because students are in school 30 minutes beyond the 6½ hours required by state law. While the state allows district to stockpile a maximum of 13 days, some of those are in-service for staff. 

DeSoto County Schools will not have school on Wednesday, Feb. 4, according to Lauren Margeson, executive administrative assistant to Superintendent Cory Uselton.

All University of Memphis locations will remain in modified campus operations — including remote classes and work for students, faculty and staff — until Tuesday, Feb. 3. Activities and events at all University of Memphis locations are canceled or postponed. All Memphis campus locations will return to in-person classes on Wednesday, Feb. 4. A decision regarding Wednesday operations for the Lambuth Campus in Jackson will be made on Tuesday.

Rhodes College is open.

The Christian Brothers University will resume normal operations on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Memphis campus moved to a restricted operations status beginning Thursday, Jan. 29. Employees who do not require campus access will continue to work remotely with the support of their supervisor. All academic programs will continue to be delivered remotely until further notice.

Southwest Tennessee Community College will reopen Wednesday, Feb. 4. On-campus classes and operations will resume for all campus locations.

Catholic Diocese of Memphis Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The Diocese’s Catholic Center Office (Chancery) will open Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 8 a.m.

MPD inclement-weather policy

The Memphis Police Department has canceled its inclement-weather policy effective Monday afternoon, Feb. 2.

Warming centers

Memphis

Both Hospitality Hub warming center locations will close Monday Feb 2, at noon.

Upcoming opening hours will be posted on the Hub’s social media sites as they are confirmed.

North Mississippi

In Southaven, the Community Safe Room at 7312 U.S. 51 N. opened at noon Friday. The City of Hernando opened the Gale Center at 2601 Elm St. at 5 p.m. Friday.

Olive Branch

The City of Olive Branch confirmed their warming center locations and times, updating residents on preparations for the winter weather.

The city announced the Community Storm Shelter will serve as a warming center. The shelter is located on the campus of Olive Branch Elementary at 9549 Pigeon Roost Road.

Additionally, the city stated Ash’s Irish Pub, located at 9200 Goodman Road, suite 300, will be open to the community as needed.

Libraries, parks and museums

Libraries

Memphis Public Libraries area operating under an inclement weather policy with seven locations open 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

  • Benjamin L Hooks Central Library*: 3030 Poplar Ave.
  • Whitehaven Branch: 4120 Millbranch Road
  • Raleigh Branch: 3452 Austin Peay Highway
  • Cordova Branch: 8457 Trinity Road
  • Parkway Village Branch: 4655 Knight Arnold Road
  • Crenshaw Branch: 531 Vance Ave.
  • Frayser Branch: 2220 James Road

*Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library is the only branch open Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Parks

Due to inclement weather, Memphis Parks activities are canceled. 

In Collierville, the Collierville Burch Library and the Collierville Community Center & Fitness Center are closed.

While all programming is called off this weekend, the Overton Park Shell invites the community to slide down “the best sledding slope in town.” They do ask all sledders to stay off the stage and stairs, exercise precaution on the “slope” and surrounding areas where ice accumulates, and to haul all makeshift sledding materials away.

Transportation

MATA will operate limited snow route service from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, as road conditions allow.

The following routes will operate:

  • Route 1 – Union
  • Route 2 – Madison
  • Route 8 – Chelsea & Highland
  • Route 11 – Frayser
  • Route 19 – Vollintine
  • Route 36 – Lamar
  • Route 39 – South Third (route will end at Shelby Drive due to icy conditions)
  • Route 40 – Stage & Lauderdale
  • Route 42 – Crosstown
  • Route 50 – Poplar
  • Route 52 – Jackson
  • Route 53 – Summer
  • Route 57 – Park

Some routes will operate on detours. Riders are encouraged to visit matatransit.com for the most current route and detour information.

MATAPlus will continue for medical and dialysis trips. 

MATA transit centers will be open 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.:

  • William Hudson Transit Center
  • Airways Transit Center
  • American Way Transit Center

All other MATA services, including Groove on Demand, Ready! and the trolley, remain suspended.

Government

Shelby County Clerk’s Office

With the exception of the locations on Austin Peay Highway and Riverdale Road due to their ice-covered parking lots, all other Shelby County Clerk’s Office locations will be open Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Shelby County

Shelby County commissioners have postponed their Monday, Feb. 2, meeting and rescheduled it for Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Shelby County courts

Every Shelby County Criminal Court division is open expect 5 and 7.

Members of the public are encouraged to monitor official Shelby County communications for updates and to prioritize safety during severe winter weather conditions.

Shelby County Juvenile Court

The Shelby County Juvenile Court will be closed for the rest of the week. All dockets are canceled except for the following which will be held virtually:

  • Preliminary hearings at 9 a.m.
  • Detention/in-custody delinquency hearings at 1 p.m.
  • Dependency and neglect, all day
  • Custody and visitation, all day

Staff will work remotely, and if family can’t attend a hearing virtually, it will be reset to the next available docket date.

Shelby County Assessor of Property

The Shelby County Assessor of Property’s on site in-person operations at 1075 Mullins Station Road and 157 Washington Ave. closed until further notice.

Bartlett

City offices will open On Monday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Collierville

Collierville Town buildings, administrative offices and the library will return to normal business hours with regular programming. The Parks and Recreation basketball programs will resume with games at the Linda Kerley Center. All senior programming is postponed until further notice.

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting scheduled for Monday evening has been canceled. All agenda items will be rolled to the Feb. 9 agenda. 

Collierville Schools Board of Education will not have its monthly meeting Tuesday. The announcement came Sunday as wintry precipitation dwindled but frigid temperatures remained. All items will roll to the agenda for the Tuesday, Feb. 24, meeting.

Collierville Public Works transfer station will be closed. Residents are also reminded that the former landfill area, often referred to as “Mount Trashmore,” is a state-monitored construction site and remains off-limits to the public for sledding or any other activities. Neighborhood roads remain hazardous.

DeSoto County

All DeSoto County offices and the Agri-Education Center closed. Justice, County, Circuit and Youth courts will also be closed. However, officials noted Chancery Court Judge Percy Lynchard will still hear regularly scheduled matters on the Wednesday docket. Continuances will be granted upon request. Although the Chancery Clerk’s Office will be closed, orders can be filed when the office reopens. 

Germantown

Germantown has rescheduled the meeting where it will vote on tax-increment financing for The Standard, a mixed-use development replacing Carrefour at Kirby Woods. The meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. The meeting will include time for public comment.

These facilities are closed: the Great Hall & Conference Center, the Germantown Community Library and the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Germantown Athletic Club and City Hall will be open Friday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26, was canceled. All items will be moved to the Feb. 9 agenda.

Trash collection

Collierville

Trash collection will be delayed by one day this week. The town said the changed schedule is for the safety of crews as neighborhoods streets are still icy in some places. 

Germantown

Waste Pro canceled Monday collection in Germantown after the city announced Sunday night service was planned to resume. Friday customers were supposed to be picked up Monday since they have not had trash collection since Jan. 16. Their collection was delayed by a day the week of Jan. 23, and then service did not occur Jan. 24 due to the winter weather.

Friday customers are encouraged to leave their carts at the curb and Waste Pro will work to collect them over the course of the week. Collection should resume Tuesday. There is a one-day delay meaning residents collection will occur the day after their normally scheduled weekday.

Only trash and recycling will be collected. Yard waste will not occur this week. With continued uncertainty around road conditions, Germantown customers are encouraged to leave their carts at the curb until collection occurs.

Animal shelters

Collierville Animal Shelter is closed for public visits and adoptions, but internal care for animals will proceed.

Memphis Animal Services is intent is to operate at full service. However, depending on the weather conditions they may reduce operating hours and locations. See website and social media for latest updates.

MAS stated in a news conference Sunday, Jan. 25, that outside shelters and dog houses are insufficient in the low temperatures the area is experiencing. Pets should be kept indoors. 

Cancellations

Germantown Municipal School District will reschedule its school board meeting planned for Tuesday. The district had not selected a new date as of Monday afternoon.

City of Bartlett residents can find up to date information on the city’s social media sites or at their neighborhood information hub.

Collierville residents can find updates on the town’s website where they can also sign up for phone or email alerts. 

Information about Germantown closures can be found through Germantown Alert. Updates will also be posted on the City’s website and official social media channels as conditions change. 

Lakeland residents can receive weather and safety updates by call, email, text and more with the City’s Mass Notification System. 

Millington residents can find updates on the city’s social media sites and the city website and may sign up for alerts here.
