The trial for the man accused of killing a Rhodes College student, originally scheduled to begin today, has been postponed to Feb. 12, 2024.

Rainess Holmes, who has been indicted for his alleged actions in a home invasion in 2021, was scheduled for a Monday, Aug. 14, court date. The trial date has been pushed back six months.

Holmes has been indicted on several crimes related to Andrew Rainer’s killing, including premeditated first-degree murder, murder in perpetration of a robbery, murder in perpetration of a burglary, especially aggravated robbery, especially aggravated burglary, especially aggravated kidnapping, four counts of aggravated robbery and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Holmes’ girlfriend and co-defendant in the case, Lori Frye, was also set to be tried Monday. If her case still moves forward to trial, she will be tried at the same time as Holmes, according to her lawyer, Kenneth Brashier.

Frye has been indicted on several charges as well, mostly related to facilitating the acts Holmes has been accused of carrying out. Her charges include three counts of facilitation to first-degree murder, one count of facilitation of especially aggravated burglary, one count of facilitation of especially aggravated kidnapping, one count of facilitation of especially aggravated robbery and four counts of facilitation of aggravated robbery.

Holmes is accused of killing Andrew “Drew” Rainer, a 22-year-old Rhodes College student during a home invasion on Oct. 3, 2021.

Holmes and several others allegedly broke into an off-campus home where Rainer, other students and a guest were staying. Holmes and the others demanded electronics and other items.

Rainer was shot in the chest during the break-in and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Holmes was identified as a suspect in the crime after police tracked a stolen iPad to a hotel room where he was staying. After initially escaping, he was arrested by U.S. Marshals and Memphis Police Department officers on Oct. 5, 2021, just days after the shooting.

Frye was arrested several months later on March 4, 2022.
