Calkins: The basketball manager at Houston High delivered a moment no one will soon forget

Geoff Calkins has been chronicling Memphis and Memphis sports for more than two decades. Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.

The chants began as early as the third quarter.

“We want Henry!”

“We want Henry!”

‘We want Henry!!

But Henry Griffith was not going in.

Griffith is the manager of the Houston High School basketball team. He’s a senior — and has been the manager all four of his high school years.

Griffith makes sure the bleachers are pulled out before home games. He fills water bottles. Gets the coach’s clipboard ready. All the mundane things that basketball managers do.
