Sports offer me a serene escape whenever I feel disheartened by global conflict, work stress or personal setbacks.

Whether playing ourselves or rooting for a favorite team, sports are recreation — and re-creation. The way in which they make us new and ready to face routines and responsibilities again is revivifying.

Sports are more than just a distraction from “the real world;” they also serve as valuable metaphors for life.

Next week’s Opening Day for Major League Baseball got me thinking about baseball as a counterpoint to the violence plaguing our nation and world.
