Memphis Tigers triple jumper Oagenga Mdlela entered the American Athletic Conference Championships filled with doubt.

The Refilwe, South Africa, native hadn’t had the type of outdoor 2025 track season he anticipated, after already having a disappointing end to the indoor season. He placed sixth at the AAC indoor championships, which he described as a heartbreaking moment.
