Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He now splits his time between Minneapolis-St. Paul, where his wife works, and Memphis.
The last time the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz played basketball wasn’t that long ago. It was April 10, the penultimate game of the season you’ve tried — perhaps successfully! — to forget and perhaps the absolute nadir of the NBA’s tanking descent.
That was the game where two-way rookie Jahmai Mashack played all 48 minutes and posted the rare quadruple-double: 13 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists and 10 turnovers. The Grizzlies only used six players, and Mashack is the only one who’s still around. The Jazz — they won 147-101 — used only seven with only then-rookie Ace Bailey surviving the summer.
Utah was an enticing season-opening opponent for the Grizzlies.
