It was in June when Memphis’ head coach first looked around the Tigers’ Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center and saw the makings of a team he believed could compete with any in the country.

Memphis Tigers point guard Kendric Davis got a text from Ja Morant and Desmond Bane before Saturday’s game telling him to “go be that killer you are.” Davis didn’t have to be told twice, evidently. He scored 27 points as Memphis knocked off unbeaten Auburn.

In Memphis’ win Saturday in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, Davis was a man with all the answers. 

“Having Coach Brown as part of our program over the last year-and-a-half was very impactful on our student-athletes and me as a coach,” head coach Penny Hardaway said in a statement.

The contest with Auburn offers Memphis a chance to grab its first signature, NCAA Tournament-resume-boosting victory of the season.

What Memphis coach Penny Hardaway said first during his radio show Monday was telling.

The Tigers’ contest with the Trojans comes on the heels of a big win over Ole Miss and four days before a showdown with No. 11 Auburn.

It was all about the win. But the Tigers big was just three assists shy of delivering a triple double in the victory over the Rebels.

Alex Lomax called it a “legendary” night. It was, at the very least, emphatic. Exactly 364 days after losing to Ole Miss in chaotic fashion, the Memphis Tigers exacted their revenge, 68-57.

Memphis built a 22-point lead in the first 12 minutes, and after an Ole Miss comeback, the Tigers hung on for the 11-point win at FedExForum.
