The voters have spoken. And they have chosen Jacob Hill and Kaylei Evans as the OrthoSouth Fans’ Choice high school basketball players of the week.

Hill won 54% of this week’s boys total after leading MUS to an impressive homecoming victory against St. Benedict on Feb. 6. The junior connected on 4-of-5 3-pointers and finished with 14 points as the Owls improved to 13-6 with a 62-26 win.

Second place, at 22%, went to Fred Martin of Harding. Kamryn Green of St. George’s and Houston’s Justin Frison rounded out the field.

Evans, who plays at Lausanne, won 59% of the girls total after averaging 14.5 points and hitting eight 3-pointers in a pair of games last week, a loss to Harding and a win against Northpoint.

Bella Rose Austin of Harding was second with 22% followed by Collierville’s Jaliyah Kelly and Ava Jones of Hutchison.

Green, Jones earn staff honors

Our staff picks, meanwhile, will be Green and Jones, and they will be honored as the OrthoSouth Grizzlies’ Player of the Week.

Green, a 6-foot-7 junior, finished with 19 points, 20 rebounds and two blocks on Feb. 2 to spark St. George’s to a crucial 64-56 victory against region rival Harding. Jones — who was named a Division 2-AA Miss Basketball finalist Thursday — averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds in Hutchison’s victories against St. Agnes and St. Benedict.

A new round of voting begins Monday.
