Vote for the high school football player of the week, Week 5
Once again this season, The Daily Memphian is recognizing a high school football player of the week.
And we need you — our readers — to help.
Each Monday, we post several of the top performers from the previous week’s games. Readers can vote for their favorite until Thursday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m., at which point the winner will be announced.
Here are the candidates from Week 5.
Reginald Banks, Melrose: One of the city’s leading rushers, Banks added to his totals last week. Especially his yards-per-carry. The 5-7, 180-pound junior ran for 194 yards on just six attempts and scored four touchdowns (96, 1, 51, 31) in the Golden Wildcats’ 44-0 win over Wooddale in a Region 8-3A contest.
Justin Barham, St. George’s: The Gryphons rebounded nicely from their first loss of the season with a 30-12 victory over North Panola. Barham led the way, rushing for 143 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns, a 40-yarder to put his team up 14-0 early and a 68-yarder to close the scoring in the fourth.
Reagan Bullard, Kirby: The Cougars improved to 3-2 overall and — most importantly — remained undefeated in Region 8-4A play with a 48-0 victory over Ridgeway. Bullard was the star of the show; the sophomore had 135 yards on eight carries with three touchdowns (50, 10, 46) while also catching two passes for 45 yards and a fourth touchdown (40).
Canon Day, Houston: Day struck the Heisman Trophy pose after his touchdown run against Bartlett last week and his performance was certainly award-worthy. The junior completed 12 of 17 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns while carrying 16 times for 164 yards and a 35-yard scoring run as the Mustangs won the Region 7-6A opener for each team, 38-35.
Timmie Robertson, White Station: Robertson was a huge portion of White Station’s offense last week, rushing for 189 yards on just 14 carries and scoring on a 78-yard run to lead his team to a 21-7 victory over Cordova.
Dominic Rocconi, Collierville: You only get one chance to make a good first impression. And Rocconi sure did that in his first varsity start. The freshman — and son of Dragons coach Joe Rocconi — completed 7 of 11 passes for 190 yards and five touchdowns in a 55-7 victory over previously-undefeated Region 7-6A rival Arlington.
