Lakeland mulls overlay district for undeveloped land on U.S. 70

The Lakeland Municipal Planning and Design Review Commission wants to take a proactive approach to future development of some parcels scattered along U.S. 70.
The goal is to get more control over what is developed along the highway, a major east-west artery through the city. The challenge is making sure that the growing residential areas are not affected by commercial projects surfacing in the area, such as a Dollar General store proposed on the east side of the city.
At the commission’s meeting on Thursday, Aug. 13, former Lakeland Commissioner Richard Gonzales noted that more than 1,100 homes are located or planned between the Creekside and Heathfield neighborhoods along U.S. 70.
