The Hernando Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Tuesday, March 24 to hire accounting firm BDO to conduct a forensic audit of the city’s utility fund, capping the initial phase of the investigation at $25,000.

The decision in a special-called meeting follows the recent revelation of a projected $2.6 million deficit in the fund for the current fiscal year.

Prior to the vote, Mayor Chip Johnson read a prepared statement to the board and the public explicitly detailing the accounting errors that led to the utility fund’s shortfall.
