Judges order Clerk’s, Sheriff’s offices to fix delays

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office must fix issues causing criminal case delays or risk having to appear in court themselves, a new order says.
The order — signed by all nine Shelby County General Sessions Criminal Court judges Monday, Nov. 24 — outlines issues with both offices causing case delays. Those problems include inmates not being brought to court by the sheriff’s office and not releasing inmates on time after they pay bail or their case concludes.
As far as the clerk’s office, the order outlines frequent administrative errors, such as staff assigning cases to the wrong judge and mislabeling misdemeanor crimes as felonies.
