University of Tennessee Health Science Center as well as local, state, and federal elected officials broke ground on a $350 million College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building Thursday — a building they say will help address a physician shortage in Tennessee and recruit prospective medical students from across the country.

The 300,000-square-foot building, which will be located at Madison Avenue and Dudley Street, will modernize the way medical students are taught, along with increasing the size of each cohort, university officials said. It will grow student cohort sizes from around 175 to 250, and the new building is expected to educate about 1,450 additional health professionals during its first five years, officials said.

The opening is scheduled for January 2030.
