Seven curiosity seekers gathered on a recent, steamy Saturday morning at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park — not to hike, mind you — but to count butterflies. With a clipboard and binoculars at the ready, count coordinator Bart Jones took these citizen scientists to specific areas around the park and to Eagle Lake, a nearby state natural area, in search of butterflies.
Pam Routh handed Jones three dollars, the nominal fee the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) charges each volunteer.
