The Early Word: A task force tussle, a Ja shrug and a Michelin guide

Hello Memphis-land. Today is Tuesday, Nov. 4. I’m Holly Whitfield, filling in for your usual intrepid Early Wordian Bianca Phillips. She’ll be back tomorrow.
Downtown Dining Week continues through the week, including a few restaurants named to the Michelin guide to the American South, which we’ll get into below.
Tussle in Nashville: Is the Tennessee National Guard an army or a militia? Did Gov. Bill Lee have a right to deploy them to Memphis? These were Monday’s court discussions in Nashville.
Arrest updates: October numbers are in from the Memphis Safe Task Force’s immigration arrests.
Man shot by task force charged: A man shot last week by federal law enforcement officers has been charged with attempted murder.
Whoa, we’re halfway there: Today’s Memphis City Council’s meeting means we’re two years into the council’s and Mayor Paul Young’s terms. (As to whether or not we’re “livin’ on a prayer,” I’ll leave that up to you.)
50%, maybe: SNAP benefits could be partially funded.
Not seeing stars: Five Memphis-area restaurants were honored at a Michelin ceremony, but there’s more to the guide than just stars.
Guide to the guide: Read up on those five restaurants — a New Orleans-inspired spot, a Chinese chain, a pizza place, a cozy Italian joint and a Downtown dining destination.
Much Ja-do about nothing: Ja Morant sprinted, alley-ooped, slammed the ball through the net before returning to the bench “without an expression on his face.”
Have a lovely Tuesday. Bianca Phillips will be back with you tomorrow.
