City & State removing retail side to focus on coffee

By , Daily Memphian Published: March 01, 2026 4:00 AM CT

Longtime City & State patron Rachel Mattson has mixed feelings about what’s happened at the Broad Avenue coffee shop.

Her first impression of City & State was the coffee side of the business, but throughout the years, she’s also been a regular customer of the store’s retail side, purchasing gifts for loved ones and sometimes for herself.

Mattson spent about a decade living in Boston and Minneapolis for school before returning to Memphis about 10 years ago. Her return was shortly after City & State made its debut.
