Geoff Calkins has been chronicling Memphis and Memphis sports for more than two decades. Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.

The most memorable stories didn’t always make it into the newspaper.

Like the time the guy hired to clean the massive windows at 495 Union Ave. fell from his scaffolding.

Bobby Hall, the longtime sports writer, offered the following hopeful assessment after seeing the man plunge past his fifth-floor window: “He was fine when he went by here.”
