Lakeland school district stands against possible open-enrollment legislation

The Lakeland School System wants to make clear that they oppose mandatory open enrollment and changes to policy proposed in recent years by some state legislators.

The municipal school district’s Board of Education this week unanimously passed a resolution opposing mandatory universal open enrollment legislation and policy in Tennessee schools.

State law requires every public school district conduct an open enrollment period each year, but it does not require accepting every student who lives outside the district’s boundaries. Acceptance is based on space and local policy.
