The former University of Memphis football player spent Saturday showing students that being a professional athlete isn’t the only goal worth chasing.
Big 12 presidents met Monday to discuss the offer, Ross Dellenger’s report says. He also added that “the proposition is not believed to have the necessary support, for now.”
A report states the United Football League is moving the Memphis Showboats, Houston Roughnecks, Birmingham Stallions and Michigan Panthers.
James Smith IV was selected by the New York Mets in the 14th round of the MLB Draft. The former Northpoint Christian standout chose to remain with the Tigers for another year.

Memphis has a combined record of 21-5 the last two seasons, but the Tigers are still searching for their first conference title since 2019.
“We’ve had very transparent conversations for a year about what’s happening,” Pernetti said. “I understand Memphis’ ambition. I think other schools have that ambition.”
American commissioner Tim Pernetti said improving the basketball league is about “bringing the bottom up.”
The Tigers traveled to UTSA on Nov. 2, 2024, and left with a 44-36 loss. It was one of two losses Memphis suffered during last year’s 11-2 season.
Memphis football has a variety of position battles to sort through after losing most of its production from last year’s 11-2 team.
Most of the key players from last year’s 11-2 team are gone, and the Tigers started training camp with plenty of mystery, but the one group that has the most returning talent is the running backs.
Cortez Braham Jr. immediately becomes one of the top candidates to lead a retooled Memphis receiving room. He caught 56 passes for 724 yards and four touchdowns for Nevada last season.
Sam Brumfield spent two years at Northwest Mississippi Community College to start his career. He played the 2023 season at Middle Tennessee before spending last season at Virginia Tech and will finish with the Tigers.
Greg Desrosiers Jr. has three songs on Apple Music and Spotify. Most of his music is unreleased, but he shares his catalog with teammates.
The Tigers’ 34 votes were the ninth-most votes outside of the Top 25.
Multiple schools offered defensive lineman William Whitlow Jr. a major pay raise while in the portal. But, to him, the Memphis Tigers are worth the money.
