Holy Smoke! This live-fire team is just getting started

By , Daily Memphian Published: May 16, 2026 4:00 AM CT

Hot off the grill from filming the seventh season of Food Network’s “BBQ Brawl,” Dakari Akorede decided to try his hand at the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

Akorede and Justin Robinson are the pitmasters for the Atlanta-based live-fire team Holy Smoke, and Akorede called it a “blessing” for them to be accepted into the live-fire competition, since only 20 teams were allowed to compete.

“Open flame always interested me, but I didn’t ever think I could compete in it,” he said. “We’re probably the most unknown team here.”
