DeSoto County district attorney reflects on time in office, outlines plan to speed up court cases

By , Daily Memphian Published: April 20, 2026 4:00 AM CT

DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton is not ready to declare mission accomplished just yet, but after his recent State of the County address, he reflected on his time serving the district.

While he recently cited a drop in overall crime during a local chamber luncheon, Barton clarified that his proudest metric is the 38% decrease specifically in violent crime.

“Overall crime is down, but I’m most proud that violent crime is coming down,” Barton said. “In my race (for district attorney), the sheriff race was going on, and that was a topic that just came up a lot. So we’re glad that’s going in the right direction.”
