Clay Bailey, a lifelong Memphian, has worked as a reporter in the city four decades. He concentrated on suburban coverage for the bulk of his career, except for a stint as sports editor of The Daily Memphian when it launched in September 2018. He now is suburban editor and also serves as a freelance sports writer for The Associated Press.

Well, that plan for the Memphis Motorsports Park sure fell apart like a blown engine entering the first turn of the racetrack.

Fact is, the hopes never even made it to the starting line.

Reporter Michael Waddell, who has covered the celebrated resurrection of the racing venue south of Millington, told the tale this week of how the high hopes and dreams announced for the drag strip in January crashed and burned when it was put on the auction block this week.
